~*~ Mixed Media May ~*~ Kelley Miller ~*~

What does mixed-media art mean to you?

To me mixed media is about using what you have in your Art room, to create what you feel at the time. Mixed Media means no boundaries….

How long have you been a mixed-media artist?

I started creating Art while I was healing from a work injury. It was an outlet both emotionally and physically. That was in 2008.

How has your art impacted or enhanced your life?

Art allows me to say things I wouldnt know how to say otherwise. I often use words in my Artworks, so they speak for me when I can’t. Usually those words are from the depths of emotion, from the depths of needing to tell myself what I need to hear, or even words that I have prayed. And hopefully others connect to that. I have found that they often do, and so because of that, Art has made me feel less alone. And because Artists generally work alone…..thats very important.

What are a few of the mixed-media supplies you find yourself using most?

I love using brown tissue paper, vintage ephemera such as wallpaper, music scores, bibles, hymnals, dictionaries, etc. I love Soft body acrylics. I use Acrylic glazing liquid in satin to sheer out the paint and give depth. I also love using Alcohol.

Who are some of your favorite mixed-media artists?

This changes, and honestly I couldnt name anyone specifically right now. I tend to be an insular artist, and if I look at too many artists I start losing what it is about me that makes my art unique. I don’t want to look like anyone else. I don’t want people to look at my Art and say, “wow, that looks like so and so influenced her”, or, “looks like she took a class with so and so” I want people to say “That looks like Kelley Miller created that” Although, I’m sure I’m still far away from achieving that. I do admire other Artists work, but I dont have any “favorites”.

What makes your mixed-media art unique?

I think my layering techniques make my Art unique. I think my use of placement and balance make my Art unique. And there are definitely colors I gravitate towards that show up often. And its unique simply because I created it.

Where can we find you?

About Kelley Miller: I was born and raised in Southern California, but currently live in Elizabethtown Kentucky. I currently am living with a friend and my new 4 month old schipperke-chihuahua mix Stella. I have a beautiful 22 year old daughter, who I love more than life itself. I am a trained RN, but in 2006 was injured on the job, and havent worked since. After undergoing a total of 13 surgeries/procedures I began to take Art courses online to help with the healing process, and deal with the Chronic pain. As a result, I found a way to express what words often times could not. One course I took was with Mixed media artist Kelly Rae Roberts, which springboarded my journey to creating Art as a business. While it has been a slow process, it has brought me some of the greatest joy, and most irreplaceable relationships I will have ever known. Shout out to my Fly Tribe!!!
