What does mixed media mean to you?
Mixed media means freedom to experiment with an unlimited range of materials!
How long have you been a mixed media artist?
Since 2006 when I started my faith journal. I used collage most of the time because I was not confident about my drawing skills.
How has art impacted or enhanced your life?
I can say that it impacts my life every single day because I start my day in my craft room. I wake up anywhere from 3 am to 4:30 am. I pray, read the bible and then I paint a bible verse so that I can take it with me the whole day.
What are a few of the mixed media supplies you find yourself turning to the most?
Acrylics, rubber stamps, pastel pencils, book paper, gesso, crochet thread, buttons…
Who are some of your favorite mixed media artists?
- Nina Bagley
- Lisa Kaus
- Jane Spakowsky
- Ann Bagby
- Misty Mawn
- Gustavo Aimar
- Louise O’Hara
- DJ Petit
Oh dear! I could go on and on and on…..
Tell us about your creative process.
I use wall putty or gesso to create some texture on book paper. Then I use acrylic paints, sponges, hand carved stamps, bottle caps, etc to make interesting backgrounds. I think if you have a wonderful background, then the art is more vibrant. Then I draw on the background and paint over it. I like the background to show through, it makes it more complex. I also enjoy stitching over it sometimes. If I don’t have much time, if I’m in a hurry, or lazy, I also like to trace faces, bodies, hands, and then paint it. I think tracing hones our muscle memory for drawing! I took 2 years to practice drawing hands. Now I am practicing drawing birds. I’ve improved a lot! I remember when my niece thought my drawing of a bird was a fish!!!
What makes your mixed-media art unique?
Most of my art comes from a desire to embed Scripture in my heart. That was the beginning, and then it evolved into a partnership with the Creator where I saw that He wanted me to bless others with it.

|My full name is Patricia Joy Paterno, and I’ve been married for 20 years to a man with a good heart. His name is Luigi, and he is an IT Consultant. We have one son, Josh, who is as funny as his dad. I have been working in our family business, papemelroti, since I was 11. When I get home from work, I stay in my craft room and paint, make scrapbook layouts, ATCs, and think of ways to re-use things normal people would throw away. I like sharing my joy and have paint parties for my friends!|
